Cory Reid, Sponsor and Coach of New London’s Esports Team has announced the Esports team will compete in the Fall State Tournament. Both the Super Smash Brothers team and the Smite team have qualified. The Fall State Tournament is in Marshalltown on November 15th. Esports has Fall, Winter and Spring seasons
Both teams had an incredible fall season. Super Smash Bros 7-0 and Smite 6-1. The Super Smash Bros team won with a mixture of experienced returning players and some talented new Freshman. The Smite team played some very tough matches this season. The players had excellent communication and presented exceptional strategy during the matches. They also did more work together preparing for the matches.
Esports began in 1972 soon after game consoles became common. The first nationwide competition in 1980 involved 10,000 people playing Space Invaders. Not surprisingly competition became very cutthroat during a Donkey Kong tournament in 1981. The IAHSEA (Iowa High School Esports Association) began with a beta season in September of 1919. Due to COVID-19 the first full season was 2020-2021This teacher-led organization competes in seven games across three seasons. The organization is growing rapidly across the state. The mission is to support safe and competitive environments for Iowa high school students while promoting team building, communication, and critical thinking through esports programs. These programs will provide an opportunity for more students to feel connected to school as well as provide future opportunities in the fields of technology and sports.
Go Tigers! Decidedly SMASH and SMITE your opponents!
