The National Honor Society (NHS) held its annual initiation ceremony on April 9 in the HS auditorium. It is a ceremony to welcome the new members, introduce the new officers, and say goodbye to the graduating members.
The purpose of the NHS is to instill enthusiasm for scholarship, to recognize outstanding students, to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character.
Membership in the local NHS chapters is an honor given students by a faculty committee and is based on the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members are responsible for continuing to demonstrate those characteristics. The local NHS group does service projects throughout the school year. Some projects that NHS has done this year were helping out with the food pantry truck twice a month, the fall/spring blood drives, and they usually they help during the senior spotlight lunch, making sure it runs smoothly. The faculty adviser for NHS is Corey Reid.
This year the new members include: Noah Crossett, Sullivan Barron, Teresa Coleman, Abigail Denney, Sydney Kracht, Wyatt Mangold, Madelynn Nelson, and Riley Raines.
The new officers are: President — Jayden Bergman; Vice President — Noah Crossett; Secretary — Megan Lee; and Treasurer — Zoe Long.
The guest speaker this year was Dr. James Oudenhoven. He emphasized to these students that being chosen to NHS is evidence that their teachers see in them as people of character who provide leadership, scholarship, and service at NLHS. He ended by telling these students that he is confident they will be successful in their future endeavors.
The evening was capped off with light refreshments for the NHS students, families, faculty, and guests.
