The New London City Council met in special session on April 24, 2023. All City Council members were present with the exception of January Benjamin. They approved the agenda and opened their meeting with public hearings.
•The first hearing was to take citizen questions and/or comments on the proposed budget for fiscal year 2024. Hearing none, they approved Resolution #399 authorizing and directing levy of property taxes and adopting a budget for the 2023-2024 FY. The property tax rate for regular property is $12.62658 and $3.00375 for agricultural land.
•The second public hearing was to take citizen questions and/or comments on the Council’s intention on entering into a loan agreement to purchase a 2020 Rosenbauer PumperTruck with a principal amount not to exceed $440,000. Hearing none, the Council approved resolution #400 authorizing the Mayor and City Clerk to enter into a loan agreement to purchase a 2020 Rosenbauer Pumper Truck with a principal amount not to exceed $440,000.
Concerning the firetruck purchase, Kasi gave the Council several options to finance the firetruck. She is waiting to see if one institution’s rate, quoted in January, is still accurate. The Council plans to take action at their next regular meeting on May 8, 2023.
In old business, the Council approved the change order for Jones Contracting to move the excess dirt on the Pine Street Subdivision Second Addition for $21,492.00.
In new business, the Council then discussed partnering with the New London Community School District for a school resource officer. The police officer on duty is already patrolling traffic at the beginning and end of the school day, and the Mayor would like to see the officer patrol the school property for a couple hours each day until the end of the school year as a trial run. The discussion will continue between the two entities.
The meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m. The next regular meeting of the New London City Council will be May 8, 2023 at 6 p.m. at the City office,
