The New London School Board met on Monday, April 15, 2024. With all members present, the Board opened a public hearing concerning the proposed FY 2025 budget. The proposed New London School budget summary was presented.
Dave Simmons addressed the Board during the public hearing. He addressed items that included possible changes to AEA services and various other issues, including teacher minimum salaries, open enrollment, and District-owned properties. While Simmons says he is looking out for taxpayers, he remarked that he feels the people in charge are doing a “pretty good job.” The tax rate was $17.80 per $1,000 of valuation in 2015. Since then it has been lowered to $15.68. The goal is to hopefully keep reducing it.
The public hearing adjourned and the regular session began. The board approved the amended agenda and the consent agenda.
The board then approved softball and baseball apparel sales for fundraisers.
Reports were next. The board heard from both building principals. They gave a preview of upcoming activities for the rest of the school year.
The superintendent gave an update on various vacancies. He has received applicants for A.D. and four applicants for Mrs. Boyer’s position. The 4-day school week is shelved for now.
The board took the following actions:
- Approved FY25 proposed budget @ $15.68 tax rate.
- Approved FY Budget guarantee resolution.
- Approved New London Journal as the District’s official publication.
- Approved 27 — 2024 seniors for graduation.
- Approved fourth/fifth grade additional furniture needs with increased numbers.
- Approved FY 23 Audit report. The Auditors recommended another business person be hired to improve segregation of duties.
Mike McBeth provided a second reading of Board policies 210.01 — 217. They attached and approved the clarification of how a petition will be handled in the future.
The Board briefly went into closed session to discuss negotiations, then returned to open session and adjourned.
The next regular meeting of the New London School Board will be May 15, 2024 at 6 p.m. at the north campus boardroom.
