NLHS Tiger Sports Round Up

JH Boys Basketball
On Thursday, February 1, the Tigers traveled to Burlington to play the Notre Dame Nikes. The 7th grade played hard, but was stymied by the Nikes’ 3-point shooting. The Tigers took it on the chin 34 - 25. Kellan Porter led the Tigers with 17 points. Reid Lindsey and John Gallup each scored three and Linken Welcher added two.
The 8th grade game followed and they continued their winning ways 38-27. Gavin Strawhacker was the Tigers’ leading scorer with 12 points. Dylan Burden added eight. Cole Swanson, Owen Severson, and Jaece Deterdling each scored six.
On February 5, the Tigers next took the long trek to Keosauqua to take on Van Buren County. The 7th grade got a big win, 52-28. No individual stats were available.
The 8th grade Tigers were also victorious, 30-15. Owen Severson had a big night leading the Tigers with 12 points. Cole Swanson scored six, Jaece Deterdling added five, Gavin Strawhacker had four, and Dylan Burden finished with three.
On February 8, the 7th grade lost a heartbreaker to Central Lee, 30-34. Kellan Porter had 28 and Jon Gallup added two.
The 8th grade had another big win of 37-33 against Central Lee. Jaece Deterdling had a game-high 14 points. Gavin Strawhacker added 11. Cole Swanson had five, Owen Severson scored four, and Natan Bergman added two.
Varsity Girls Basketball
Monday, February 5, the Lady Tigers played WACO on Senior Night. Each winter sport had only one senior. Sophie Malott was celebrated with applause for her play over the last four years.
The Tigers won the first quarter 12 - 11, but the Warriors took charge and won the contest 49 - 29. Mylee Miller led the Tigers with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Sophie Malott had six points and six rebounds. Morgan Jones added four points and three rebounds. Kayla Strawhacker had three points, and Brooklyn Curry had two.
This game marked the end of the Tigers regular schedule.
Thursday, February 8 was the start of Class 1A/Region 8 tournament play for the Lady Tigers. Their opponent was the 18-2 Holy Trinity Crusaders. They wasted no time in showing the Tigers the door with an 80-14 victory. No individual stats were available.
The Tigers had a tough season, but never gave up. They worked hard and took on the challenge every game. Tiger Nation is so proud of these girls!
Varsity Boys Basketball
The boys took to the court next, and also honored their only senior, Brendan Richey. He has been a starter for the Tigers and shoots the three ball with great success. He was celebrated and will be missed. The Tigers then faced a stout WACO team and by halftime were down by 14 and lost the game 49 to 66. This game was the end of their regular season. There were no individual stats available.
On Friday, February 9, the Tigers hosted Columbus once again for the Class 1A Play-in Round. The Tigers won the contest, 65 to 52. There were no individual stats available. They next face the #5 ranked Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves on Monday, February 12. Tiger Nation wishes the boys good luck!
Varsity Wrestling
Saturday, February 12 started early for the Tiger wrestlers. New London traveled to Wilton along with WACO and Wapello for Districts. Kane Forseen (120) finished 2-2 in the meet taking fourth place. His wins were by technical fall and major decision. His loss was to Cade Happel in the third place match by a 10-9 decision. He finishes his freshman year with an impressive 32-10 record.
Gage Burden (126) qualified for the state tournament with a 6-2 decision over Brock Thomann of Highland in his second place match. The first place match was his only loss to Owen Adlfinger who won by fall.
Corbin Jacobs-Jewell (144) just missed qualifying for state. He defeated Wyatt Cole of Durant by fall in the third-place match to earn the chance to advance. He lost to Jordan Dusenberry of Wilton by technical fall in the second-place match.
Michael Raines (165) was in the first-place match but lost to Matthias Kohl of Lisbon by fall which sent him to the second-place match. Jensen Boorn of Wilton won by points in a 12-7 decision win. That gave Michael a third place finish. But he did reach a career milestone. He got his 100th win.
Killian Kelly lost a tough match in the second round against a Highland wrestler. He finishes a great sophomore season. Gavin Menke-Bailey and Riley Raines both lost in the consolation round and that ended their seasons. Congrats to each of these wrestlers on a great effort and a super season. Here’s wishing Gage all the luck at the state tournament!
