As summer draws to a close, the library receives the reading logs and completes the mathematics needed to award prizes. These busy ladies have worked tirelessly all summer providing hands-on activities. The modern library is no longer a “SHUSH” environment. While quiet space is normal in the library proper most hours, Ramey Hall holds many active lessons and social opportunities.
The librarians note that these events would not be possible if the New London community, organizations and businesses were not involved. The sponsors provide supplies for activities and prizes for the reading program. They answer the call and ensure the library remains an important part of life in New London. A huge Thank You is due all of them.
A popular activity at the library has been the guided painting classes offered by Miss Brittney. This year a guided painting session was held for adults and teens at the VFW. This event was a popular addition. The July guided painting session was so popular, it is being repeated on Aug. 14. Preregistration is required to ensure supplies and space are adequate. The July session was sponsored by The Guitar Farm and Lorber Insurance Agency, Inc.
The Guided Painting program for Teens and Adults was held at the VFW. The lesson was led by Jennifer Coop at Art for Art's Sake. The sponsors were the New London, Iowa Lions Club and the VFW Post 7641 New London, Iowa. Adults were able to “Sip and Paint” during the session. The Lions and the VFW Auxiliary are involved in many community activities and deserve recognition and thanks.
Reading logs were collected Aug. 2 and the Invitation Only party to celebrate the reading program was held August 8. One of the rewards for reading is a Brag Tag. This “dog tag” style necklace is given throughout the reading program. The Brag Tags are designed by our local student artist and then processed. There were 101 submissions for the 5th Annual Brag Tag Art contest this year! It was difficult to decide but 30 artists’ work was combined to make the unique tags. The library has republished names of the artists and the sponsors that made their work available. The library congratulates the featured artists and thanks the sponsors who helped it purchase the brag tags!

On the first and third Saturdays of the week, Storytime Adventure is a popular feature for the younger crowd. A particularly fun time was had when a Dinosaur Dig occurred. The event was sponsored by the Bradley Family and a number of anonymous donors. Dinosaurs are always fascinating and excavating and learning about them even more captivating.
The Nerf Wars were covered by an earlier article but the sponsors were not noted. This activity is sure to become a regular feature of the summer library program. Many, many kudos are given to the Danville State Savings Bank, Dr. Mark C. Pothitakis and Associates as well as the New London Lions Club. All the kids loved teaming up against the librarians.
The new school year starts for teachers Aug. 19 and for students Aug. 25. Keep an eye on the library and its offerings during the school year, and take every chance to help support this important part of our community.
