P.E.O. Chapter EV of the New London and Danville communities presented Officer Todd Sines of the New London Police Force with a Quilt of Valor. The Veterans’ Memorial at the corner of Pine and Main Street welcomed members of the P.E.O. chapter, Todd and his family and the community. The day was a bit cold and windy, but the sunlight made the afternoon special.
The Mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. This foundation is about people, not politics. While each Quilt of Valor is awarded to a veteran, heartfelt thanks are extended to the spouses and families of that veteran. The veteran answered the nation’s call to defend our country while his family offered silent strength during those times. The P.E.O. Chapter EV recognizes the heroism of all involved and helps the community all who defend our democracy.
The Quilt of Valor consists of three layers. The top of the quilt with its many colors, shapes and fabrics represent the many individuals making up our diverse communities. Each stitch in the quilt represents the love, gratitude and sometimes tears of the maker(s). The center batting provides its warmth. It represents the hope that the quilt will bring warmth, comfort, peace and healing to the recipient. The back is the strength, to hold the many pieces of the quilt together. The strength of the recipient, his/her faith in God, in him/herself, his/her family, our communities and our nation.
The Quilt of Valor is priceless. It can never be bought and should never be sold. Veterans often state that the quilt means more to them than any medal because it comes from the heart and hands of the maker and their community. Officer Sines served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. His quilt has a label that specifically says the Quilt belongs to him. Each time he wraps the quilt around himself may he remember the love and caring of his community. The thanks of a grateful nation is displayed in each and every piece and stitch of the quilt.
