Post Prom Committee planning Adult Prom

The history of the Promenade long and involved. The word was actually shortened to “Prom” in 1894 by an Amherst College student.
In his journal he used the word to describe a dance given at Smith College.
Evidence of these dances being held in high schools is largely found in yearbooks of the 1930s and 40s.
The cost of planning and offering the dances has increased greatly over the years. At the same time, concern regarding student activities after the dance concluded around midnight grew.
For many years parents offered activities in their own homes. Some schools became involved as well.
They rented outdoor movie theaters and the prom couples would enjoy movies, cartoons and shorts well into the early morning. These activities gradually evolved into a full-blown party after midnight.
Enticing students to these events requires more than school approval. A dedicated group of parents must each year decide on the activities, raise the money and publicize the free prizes, chances to win cash as well ensure the snacks and drinks are appealing.
These post prom parties are truly a matter of life or death in many communities.
New London’s post prom committee came up with a great fundraiser — “THE ADULT PROM.”
This event will cost $20 now or $25 at the door. It is being held Saturday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Deerwood Golf Course.
“Adults” are encouraged to dig out their old prom gear, hit the second hand stores or just come in something comfortable for the dance.
Prom photos will even be available but most importantly, the organizers advertise ADULT TIME.
All proceeds support the 2023 Post Prom.
