Memorial Day, a federal holiday held on the last Monday in May, is the nation's foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased servicemen and women. Originally called Decoration Day and celebrated May 30, it was formalized by a "Memorial Day Order" issued by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan May 5, 1868. Founded initially as a remembrance of Confederate and Union soldiers who perished in the Civil War. It has now become a tribute to all Americans lost in war.
New London’s 2 p.m. observance on Monday was very traditional. Beginning with the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem, the post chaplain read a prayer. The President of the Auxiliary presented a red, white, and blue wreath. Order 11 was shared with everyone, followed by Commander Dave McGregor’s reminder of the meaning of Memorial Day. The Honor Guard fired the three volley salute. The ceremony ended with taps. Everyone in the audience left determined to do a better job of honoring our men and women who have helped preserve the freedom of all.
