On the New London Community School District Facebook page, a post to all parents, guardians and concerned community members warns of a TikTok challenger currently circulating the nation. The entire post follows:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want to make you aware of a concerning trend that is currently circulating the nation. A viral TikTok challenge encourages students to insert metal objects — such as staples or fragments of aluminum foil — into the USB ports of school-issued Chromebooks or other devices. This is done in an attempt to short-circuit the device, often resulting in permanent damage.
We ask for your support in discussing with your children the serious risks associated with viral social media challenges. These actions carry real-world consequences — including financial costs, school disciplinary action, and potential safety hazards.
The district will not be covering the cost of damages resulting from intentional misuse or vandalism. Any students found to be engaging in this behavior will be held accountable in accordance with our student code of conduct.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our school safe and focused on learning. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
New London Community School District
All community members need to know their homes and property are in danger as well. In visiting with Technology Director, Jon Munford, he noted “There are districts in the nation where students have been charged with arson. The short circuit can cause fire.” An article published by NBC and U.S. News has told of a number of districts where evacuations were necessary to ensure the safety of the students. The article also reported law enforcement agencies are issuing criminal charges for property damage caused by this dangerous practice.
Unfortunately, Mr. Munford reports that he has already found a Chromebook damaged by a student responding to this TikTok challenge. He may run across more cases. Chromebooks are an important part of the curriculum. At the bare minimum, a student’s assignments are contained on the machine. Looking back at TikTok challenges, many of them are dangerous to the person trying them.
Address these Social Media issues with the seriousness they deserve. Make students aware of the consequences of their actions.
