On Thursday, May 22, the seniors enjoyed their “Senior Walk.” Seniors wore their official graduation gear of black gowns and mortarboard hats. The walk began in the main hall of the high school. The gauntlet for this part of the stroll was composed of the middle and high school students. on a charter bus. High and low fives abounded as well as applause.
The line then proceeded to Clark Elementary. Beginning at the back door, seniors entered the building with K-5 students anxiously awaiting. Again, high and low fives were plentiful. Hugs were also common as seniors greeted young relatives and friends. Many Clark students were also mentored by members of the Class of 2025.
The easy part of the Senior Walk was now over. The Class returned to the Clark cafeteria to write letters of advice to the current Kindergarten class. Many of the seniors had difficulty beginning their notes. All the advice that they have been given for the last thirteen years had momentarily evaporated. There was added pressure — the Kindergartners were waiting on the playground to exchange letters and congratulatory notes. The current Kindergarten class is larger than the senior class. Many seniors wrote more than one letter so everyone would have something to take home for their scrapbook. More hugs were in order.
The Class of 2025 was reminded of how things change even in their short tenure as NLCSD students. They congregated in the Kindergarten room. The graduating seniors had had the advantage of full day Kindergarten but now the classroom is the Pre-K room. Students recalled they had attended preschool at Grow and Glow or NL Daycare but public preschool for all 4-year-olds who want it was not an option.
One more memory was made when the class picture was taken in front of the electronic sign. The rest of the day was spent participating in the final classes of their school career. Tomorrow, Friday, will be spent practicing for commencement and checking out of school. Nostalgia has begun setting in and each activity is the last at NLHS.
