Southeast Iowa Union offers audio versions of articles using Instaread. Some words may be mispronounced.
The stage, the cast, the crew are ready. Everyone's favorite ogre is coming to the Ron Coberley Auditorium. Order tickets or buy them at the door. Join the talented Masqued Tigers and Vocal Music Department for one of the performances on March 7 at 7 p.m. and on March 8 at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. The Saturday evening performance is also senior night! This spin on a classic storybook tale is one you don't want to miss!
Act One opens like a storybook. Shrek tells the tale of his seventh birthday. Venturing into the world on his own, Shrek finds himself alone and angry in a swamp because of his looks. One day however his home is invaded by all the Fairytale creatures. On his way to correct and stop this invasion, he rescues the talkative Donkey. Meanwhile the villain, Lord Farquaad tortures Gingy, the Gingerbreadman to find out where Princess Fiona is locked away. He needs to marry her so he can become a King. Shrek is sent to find Fiona and deliver to Lord Farquaad. In return he can have his lonely swamp back. With many songs and adventures including a fire breathing dragon, Shrek finds the Princess only to finally find she is an ogress.
Act Two begins with Princess Fiona rises and, excited that it is her wedding day. When asked about her groom to be, Shrek and Donkey aren’t honest. After comparing their childhoods Shrek and Fiona become friends. As wedding plans progress, Lord Farquaad reveals his own sordid past. With many a stop and start, Donkey finally gets Shrek to reveal his love. The fairy tale continues to twist and turn and it appears that Shrek and Fiona will never find out the truth.
Finally, the Fairytale folk take revenge on Lord Farquaad. Shrek mans up and stops the wedding. The fire breathing dragon saves the day. As Shrek and Fiona begin their new life together, the musical ends properly with all “Living Happily Ever After.”
Don’t miss this musical! It contains something for everyone and is “irreverently” fun for the whole family.
