Archaeology and its importance is a key part of the history curriculum at New London Middle School. Annually the sixth grade takes a short walk to Dover Museum where artifacts found in a creek just outside New London are reburied in sand in galvanized laundry tubs.
Divided into two smaller groups, half the class goes outdoors to “dig” while the other half reviews some archaeological words. Two contests are held. First is how many words can you make from the word archaeology and second a word scramble reviewing common terms from the study of past human life and activities. Each paper activity has a time limit of three minutes.
Returning to the main room of the museum, students bring artifacts of their choice. Each student then does their best to describe what they found and how it might have been used. Caroline Lehman, curator of the museum, is there to help and often adds information about each object.
Everyone has a great time but all agree that 45 minutes passes far too quickly. Sixth grade is full of new experiences for students.
