Saturday, Sept. 27 has been declared the date of the DNR Statewide Volunteer Day. This annual event encourages all Iowans to lend a hand and help care for Iowa’s natural areas. With decreased support from Iowa legislature, these days become very important to preserving Iowa’s special places and its beauty.
Clean-up activities are specific to each park’s needs. It can be as simple as litter pick-up and painting to removing invasive species and collecting prairie seed. This is a great chance to get outdoors, learn something new and end the day with great satisfaction and pride.
Geode State Park is on the list. Meet at the Park Office, 3333 Racine Ave. Danville, IA 52623. The work schedule is 9-11 a.m. Work planned is painting picnic table frames and stain picnic table boards. Bring: sturdy footwear, gloves, safety glasses, sunscreen and water. Contact the park office if you plan to attend and help out. (319) 392-4601
Other state parks on the list are: Bellevue, Blackburn (Sept 21), Lake Darling, Lake Macbride, Lake Manawa, Lake of Three Fires, Ledges, Palisades Kepler, Pilot Knob, Prairie Rose, Wapsipinicon, Waubonsie, and Yellow River. Shimek State Forest is also on the list.
Southeast Iowa has several sites on the list but if you are interested in adding points to your Iowa Passport, this would be an ideal weekend to sign in. It is a great chance to help your favorite state park and qualify for the grand prize entry. Oct. 31 is fast-approaching.
