November is always a busy month at New London CSD. The tradition of filling Thanksgiving baskets with everything needed for a traditional menu requires lots of time and energy from students, staff and community. This year thirty baskets were completed.
The students held canned food drives, collected money and planned fundraising activities. Cael Wilka and Tate Welcher led many of the fundraising efforts. They organized events, created flyers, made shopping lists and actually shopped for the items. One of the most popular fundraising events was Hats for Ham. Clark students could donate a dollar and wear a hat all day at school. A change this year was that families were called and asked if they would like turkey or ham in their basket. The FCS classes did a great job with the pumpkin pies again this year. Some traditions must not be changed.
The Clark Elementary students with the help of Sydney Kracht, Makynna Carpenter and Ava DeHart organized the groceries into baskets. Hy-Vee donated many turkeys. The community deserves many thanks. It again came through with great support and donations.
The last step, getting the baskets to the families, was organized by the teachers. They spent Friday after school delivering the food. The term “baskets” is used but in reality, there are too many items. Several boxes are necessary to hold everything for the families.
Remember the Community Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. It is also an important event to support. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
