At the end of May, students head home for the summer. Little thought is given to school beyond the summer sports. In reality, the school year never ends for the NLCSD administration, staff and many teachers. Vacations are squeezed in somehow along with the preparation for another school year to begin in a few short weeks.
The coming school year has required many adjustments. Many teachers have summer classes or workshops to attend. This year major moves in classroom locations occurred. Getting a room ready for a new school year is a huge task. The organization of a different classroom location must wait until the custodial and maintenance personnel have thoroughly cleaned and or refurbished the classrooms. Changes in curriculum are also responsible for many of the moves.
The buildings were ready as teachers arrived in full force the week before the first day of school. Many teachers also came in during the summer to what New London likes to refer to as “boot camp.” New teachers are especially anxious as they begin a new job in a new district. Just as student groups have a personality, so does a district. It is always a challenge as new priorities are set.
Friday, August 22, was the final day to settle in. The traditional start includes a teacher breakfast. Prepared by the kitchen staff, the delicious breakfast was a casserole with multiple meats and eggs. The ever-popular yogurt parfait was also available. Teachers and staff created their own parfait.
After breakfast, the entire group met in the auditorium where goals for the school year are reinforced and new people introduced. Mr. Wahls began his talk with tales about his dogs. He subscribes to the adage “I want to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.” After presenting school year nuts and bolts, a video illustrating the importance of stepping beyond one’s comfort zone. The new business manager of the district gave a short talk on financial changes. Her door is open to everyone as they adjust to new payroll statements and requisition procedures. One also notes, it is fun to welcome back to the district so many former students and graduates as they make the community and school district a solid priority in their lives.
The time is short and there is still lots to do: department meetings, finishing touches on classrooms and lesson plans. Go Tigers!
