The girls golf team had a great season and an awesome state tournament outing, finishing second overall as a team.
The Class 1A state tournament was played May 25-26 at the Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone. After the first day of play, New London was second as a team behind Grundy Center by a mere 13 shots, 351 to 364. Taylor Phillips led the 1A field with a 78. Sophie Malott was tied for 12th with a 91, Emma Busby was tied for 21st at 96, Emma Nye was tied for 25th with a 99, Isabelle Nye was tied for 59th at 115, and Stevey Wintermeyer was 66th with a score of 123.
Friday, May 26, would decide who got what hardware. Taylor Phillips finished with a round of 82. That put her at 160 for the tournament, 16-over-par and one shot behind Abbie Lindeman of Grundy Center, making Phillips the runner-up medalist … by one stroke!
As a team, after Phillips’ 160, Emma Nye was 12th with a 186, Busby was 23rd with a 191, Sophie Malott was 24th with a 192, Isabelle Nye was 59th with a 224, and Stevey Wintermeyer was 67th with a 238.
Grundy Center was crowned state champion with a 706 team score. New London was runner-up with a team score of 729.
Kudos to Coach Greg Lerdal and Asst. Coach Dennis Carter as they have another stellar season for both the girls and boys. They really have a strong tradition and produce winners year after year!
So Tiger fans, let’s take a minute to think about this past year. Let’s start with last summer with the baseball team capturing the 1A state title. After that the volleyball team lost in the substate final to the #1 team in the state in Class 1A, winning two sets and taking Springville to the limit. The football team went to the playoffs for the 6th year in a row. Winter brought us a trip to the state tournament for the boys basketball team, only the second in school history. Four boys went to state wrestling: Gage Burden, Michael Raines, Trent Wilkerson, and Dom Lopez. Lopez finished 2nd. Spring had seven entries in the track and field state tournament for the boys, resulting in three event medals: a second state championship for high jumper Kade Benjamin, a third-place finish for Rylan Martin in the 800 open, and a 7th place finish for the team of Boden Pickle, London Franklin, Brigham Porter, and Martin in the distance medley. The Esports Smash Bros team was in a tournament in Marshalltown, and the Smite team just missed going to State. Add in the girls golf team’s runner-up finish, Taylor Phillips’ 2nd place individual finish, and Mason Shelledy’s 18th place individual finish, it was an amazing year by anyone’s standards.
