NEW LONDON — The week before Christmas break saw the Tigers basketball teams in different places. The girls hosted Columbus and the boys took on Iowa City Regina in Iowa City on Dec. 21.
The girls stayed with the Wildcats for the first quarter, scoring 13 points to Columbus’ 15. But they went cold in the last three quarters scoring a total of 23 points. The final was 64-36.
Junior Morgan Jones had the hot hand scoring a team-high 12 points. She added to that six rebounds and five assists. Mylee Miller had 11 points, an amazing 15 rebounds, and six blocks. Megan Lee contributed eight points and Olivia Hester added five. Sophie Malott had five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
The Tiger boys proved once again they can play with most teams, for a half anyway. They took a half time lead into the locker room, 27 — 24.
The third quarter was their undoing as Regina scored 28 to the Tigers’ 10. The final was Regina 69 to NL 49.
Coach Porter said of his team, “They are young with little varsity experience. They panic when it starts to slip away. They are still learning what it takes to win.”
Brigham Porter led the Tigers with 14 points and seven rebounds. Brendan Richey and Memphis Watson each added 12 points. Watson also had three rebounds. London Franklin scored nine points and had six rebounds. Carter Benjamin added two points. He was “a beast on the boards” pulling down nine rebounds and parceling out seven assists.
Keep workin’ hard Tiger teams!!!!
