‘The time has come’

While the line "The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things" from Lewis Carroll's "The Walrus and the Carpenter" is a bit of nonsense verse, it somehow seems important at this time of year. Rather than being satirical it encapsulates this time of the year. Seniors are closing 13 years of educational child/teen hood and looking forward to young adulthood.
May 12 begins their last week at New London Community Schools. Friday morning, a quiet breakfast was held in the Success Room. Over scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy, seniors and teachers enjoyed a bit of recall and began anxious anticipation.
In visiting with the seniors, plans ranged far and wide. Many of them intend to take advantage of the expanded programs at SCC. The ability to achieve a bachelor’s degree in the area of choice while staying close to home and saving money is appealing to many. Some students plan to go directly to work. One has already started his own business in detailing. He is able to do this at his customer’s own home. The many ideas show thought and life management skills.
Next week is crowded with last-minute directions and cautions. All the i’s must be dotted and forms properly filed. No one wants a diploma withheld because some little thing was forgotten. Senior Spotlight on Tuesday afternoon lets the community know plans and accomplishments. “Senior Skip Day” will occur although some seniors have said they don’t want to miss any of their last days of school. Sunday, May 18, 2 p.m. is it. The most important part of the day is probably the opportunity to throw the mortarboard hat in the air, or maybe moving the tassel to the left side to indicate graduation is the most important part.
At any rate, each event will be a part of the memories and at their 50-Year Reunion they will have a lot to discuss.
