Sunday, Dec. 3, New London hosted the Tiger Cub Wrestling Tournament.
This annual tournament allows young wrestlers to try their skills in competition. There were 170 preregistrations. Walk-ins were welcome. The Boosters estimated that 200 young men and women participated in the event.
There were not enough girls to have a separate bracket. The ladies had the option to have their money refunded or to wrestle in the boys’ brackets. At this time, it is not known how many received refunds but many girls were on the mats demonstrating their love for this sport. Divisions for wrestling were Super Pee Wee (Kindergarten and younger,) Pee Wee Grades 1 & 2, Bantam Grades 3 & 4, Novice Grades 5 & 6, Junior Grades 7 & 8.
The great thing about the Tiger Cub event is the entire family is there supporting their wrestlers. Babies in arms to grandparents with walkers are all present. The “rafters” in both gymnasiums were vibrating happily. The new gymnasium was a real help in organizing this huge undertaking. Wrestlers picked up their registrations in the Commons, went to the weight room to weigh in and be assigned their bracket. The Lorber Gymnasium had two matches going on each mat. Since the format was four-man round robin, this really helped keep things moving. After the bracket was completed the wrestlers and families went to the Clark gymnasium for awards. Medals were awarded to first, second, third and fourth place. First place was also awarded the wall chart. The new gym also made it possible to have 2 concession stands running. The only glitch was restroom space. It will take a bit for everyone to realize there are restrooms available in the new gym.
The Wrestling Boosters are to be commended. There were two meets back-to-back. They assured me that it made more sense this way because the mats only had to be moved twice. Saturday night and Sunday morning, there was plenty of time to clean and disinfect the mats. At any rate, the meets were well done, efficient and exciting.
