Summer months can be difficult for many families. School has closed. Breakfasts and lunches are not available for school age children. The Food Bank of Iowa received a grant to provide these meals for kids for the months of June, July and August.
Our Tiger Pantry leaders immediately took advantage of this new program. When the Iowa Food Bank truck arrived June 4, it contained the items available for Healthy Kids Iowa as well as the normal shipment. Two tons of food needed to be unloaded.
During the school year, students volunteer to help unload the truck. In summer, extra help can be a bit hard to come by. This June, the baseball team arrived to help! The young men worked tirelessly, never complained and kept asking what else they could do.
After the food was unloaded and organized, meeting the requirements of the program began. The food needed to be separated and sacked for distribution to individual families. The Tiger Pantry workers are grateful to everyone for their patience as they worked to make sure all the rules were followed. Many extra hours were spent preparing the items for distribution.
The qualifications for the breakfast and lunch boxes are different than those of the regular Food Pantry. The entire list of regulations is available on the Tiger Food Pantry Facebook page. Children must be between the ages of 4 and 18. Each eligible child’s name and age must be provided. There may be a form to fill out.
During June, July and August, the pantry will be open an additional day to distribute these boxes. second Wednesday of the month has been chosen. The first distribution session will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The second distribution session will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Only Healthy Kids items will be distributed on this day. No other food will be distributed. The usual pantry hours may be utilized for other groceries.
It will take a bit to iron out all the wrinkles and make the distribution operate smoothly. Take a moment and express your appreciation to the Pantry staff. Their service to the New London community knows no bounds.
