This Saturday evening, Feb. 1 is the New London Tiger Shooting Team’s only fundraiser. Every dollar raised goes directly to the support of the sport. Expenses such ammunition for practices and meets, clay birds and registration costs for competition. Are just part of the list.
The social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. at the VFW in Mount Pleasant. Banquet service will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25. Students aged 11 and under are free. Both a silent and a live auction will be held. Raffles for guns and related sport items are available. This is a great family event. The opportunity to visit with various business sponsors and dedicated family sportsmen is unparalleled.
The students on the team work very hard. They help serve, sell raffle tickets and are great gofers answering many requests from guests. Their best foot is always forward. The event also offers extra fun and chances to visit with them as well. The team also supports the growth of this sport in middle and high schools throughout the state. The clay bird season runs from February to June but many members helped at the Labor Day Derby at Prairie Hungers. They provided concessions for the day.
The accomplishments of the team and plans for the future are part of the presentation. John and Wende Smyth deserve great credit for all their work and organization. However, they always deflect the praise to the team’s volunteer coaches and sponsoring business and organizations.
There is a movement in public school sports. There are more offerings of activities that may become lifelong interests. They also tend to be coeducational. While competitions are separated with respect to age and expertise, middle school and high school students travel together and participate the same day. Older students quickly become mentors to the younger learners. Clay shooting, archery and esports are examples of this important movement.
The Tiger Shooting Team season starts Feb. 12. Signup will be held in the New London Community Center from 5-6:30 p.m. If this date doesn’t work, please contact John Smythe so arrangements can be made.
