It’s no secret that this has been a really tough season for the varsity basketball teams. At the end of Jan. neither the boys or girls teams had won a game. The kids played hard and never gave up, but winning didn’t come. But that changed this week.
VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL
On Feb. 3 the Cardinal Comets came to play the Tigers. Finally they did it, they pulled out a win. They beat Cardinal 37 to 33. To add even more joy to the evening, it was Senior Night and the Tiger faithful were saying “goodbye” to two cherished seniors, Mylee Miller and Morgan Jones.
Mylee had a heck of a game scoring 19 points along with six rebounds and five blocked shots. Morgan had three points and seven rebounds plus six steals. Both of these players will be sorely missed next year!
Others scoring were Molly Proost with four points and three rebounds. Megan Lee added eight points and eight rebounds. Shay Wilka had three points and six rebounds.
On Feb. 6 the Tigers traveled to Wapello for the SEISC shootout and almost got another win, but when the buzzer sounded, the score was Wapello-40/NL 38.
Mylee Miller again led the Tigers with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Megan Lee added nine points and four steals. Morgan Jones and Molly Proost each scored five. Madelynn Nelson added three and Shay Wilka had two points and six rebounds.
Even though the lost, they were in it all the way.
The Tigers start post season play on Thursday, Feb. 13 against Hillcrest Academy at Hillcrest Academy at 7 p.m. Be their to cheer these ladies on … Go Tigers!
VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
The Tiger boys hosted Twin Cedars (6-10) on Feb. 4. Time was running out for them to get a regular season victory. They came out high tempo and played with great intensity. The Tigers won the first three quarters as they looked like this just might be their night. When the final buzzer sounded, the score was Tigers 69 — Twin Cedars 59.
They too never gave up or seemed discouraged and they were finally rewarded with a “W.”
The Tigers were led by London Franklin who poured in 23 points. He grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots. Brigham Porter was right behind with 22 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Israel Lemley had 12 points, all 3-pointers. Tate Welcher had eight. Rounding out the scoring was Logan Franklin and Dylan Burden, each with two.
The win came on Senior night for the boys too. The Tigers celebrated Tate Welcher, their lone senior as he played his last game in Charles Lorber gymnasium. He too will be missed!
The Tigers played Wapello on Feb. 7 in the SEISC shootout. They started out slow, scoring 16 points in the first half to Wapello’s 38. The final score was a Wapello victory, 64 — 36.
London Franklin led the Tigers with 20 points. Login Franklin and Gavin Strawhacker each had four. Tate Welcher added three and Cole Swanson and Brigham Porter each had two.
The Tiger boys are soon in post season play too. Go Tigers!
THE JV BOYS
The JV boys' team had a good season with a least five wins. And got better and better as the season progressed. The score against Twin Cedars was a 52-30 Tiger victory. They are coming along and should be a sound nucleus for continued rebuilding the team. They are fun to watch, so stay tuned.
TIGER WRESTLING
We didn’t hear from them this week as they ready for their post season. Gage Burden, a three time state qualifier, will be working hard to make it four. Their state tournament is fast approaching, so best of luck Tigers … we’ll be cheering you on to victory!
