Tigers to State Track

The state qualifying meet (SQM) for Class 1A was held at the WACO HS track on May 15. Both Tiger teams were competing. How this works is the only guarantee of a state spot is to finish first. After that times dictate who else gets in.
Boys
- The first Tiger to go on to state was London Franklin in the 100m. His time was 11.32. He beat out Columbus’ Riley Kaalberg whose time was 11.37. Gavin Strawhacker finished 4th with a time of 11.68.
- The 200 m was won with the time of 22.56 by a Columbus runner. New London’s two entrees in this race were Cale Westerbeck (5th place — 23.82) and Brigham Porter (6th place — 24.17).
- The 400 m was won with a time of 50.27. Preston Sholl ran for the Tigers. He finished 7th with a time of 1:00.53.
- 800 m — It was won by Kohlby Nealey — WMU. He finished first at 1:57.87. NL’s Riley Raines finished 9th with a time of 2:13.15.
- 1600 m — It was won with a time 4:34.22. Raines finished 4th with a time of 4:38.34. Freshman Natan Bergman finished 12th 5:34.27.
- The 110 m hurdles was won with a time of 14.72. Dylan Burden took 8th place with a time of 17.91.
- The 4x100 m R — This Tiger relay team broke records several times this season. On this night, they (C. Westerbeck, G. Strawhacker, B. Porter, L. Franklin) took first at 43.26. Columbus finished 2nd at 43.32.
- The 4x200 m R — Another first for the Tigers, the same personnel as in the 4x100, took first with a time of 1:30.01. Pekin was second at 1:31.20.
- New London sits second in the 4x100 and third in the 4x200 in Class 1A heading into the state meet.
- The distance medley relay was won by English Valleys at 3:37.75. The Tiger team of L. Franklin, D. Burden, I. Lemley, P. Sholl placed 9th with a time of 4:25.02.
- The long jump was won by Owen Scott of Hillcrest at 22-07.75. NL’s London Franklin was 2nd at 21-11.25 and twin brother Logan Franklin was 3rd at 20-09.75.
- The shot put winner was Wapello’s Kolton Small with a throw of 49-05.75. For the Tigers, Wyatt Mangold finished 13th at 35-00.75, and Cael Wilka took 14th at 34-04.75.
- Wapello’s Kolton Small won the discus at 140-07. New London’s C. Wilka was 6th at 119-11 and Cole Swanson was 10th at 109-04.
At the end of the meet, the Tigers were sending three 1st place events (4x100 m R, 4x200 m R, 100 m dash) to the state meet. On Friday, three more were added qualifying by time. They included Riley Raines in the 1600 m and London and Logan Franklin who both qualified in the long jump. As a team, they finished the SQM in 4th with 67 points.

- 200 m — Cadance Mortimer — 26th — 36.86.
- 400 m — C. Mortimer — 13th — 1:21.27.
- 800 m — E. Adams — 16th — 3.02.82; Irelynn Kelly — 18th — 3:10.33.
- 4x100 m R — The Tigers (M. Nelson, I. Kelly, M. Nelson, E. Adams) — 12th — 59.41.
- 4x200 m R — M. Nelson, C. Nealey, A. Swanson, M. Nelson — 12th — 2:12.72.
- 800 SMR — E. Adams, M. Nelson, M. Nelson, A. Swanson — 13th — 2:20 86.
- Distance Medley Relay — M. Nelson, C. Nealey, A. Swanson, I. Kelly — 9th — 5:34.16.
- Long Jump — Madelynn Nelson — 15th — 12-07.50; Colbie Nealey — 16th — 11-05.50.
- Shot Pot — Megan Lee — 15th — 27-11.50; Lena Nelson — 21st — 24-07.50.
- Discus — Shay Wilka — 17th — 63-02; Megan Lee — 19th — 60-02.
