Tigers top WMU in District 7 championship
The Tiger Boys Basketball team faced the Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves on Tuesday, Feb. 21 to decide the District 7 Champion.
Playing in the Mediapolis gym, the winner would play in the Substate 4 game for a trip to the state tournament.
The Tigers dominated the game almost from the tip-off, taking a 38-21 lead into the locker room at the half.
It seemed to be smooth sailing, but no. At the end of the third quarter the lead was 18, 50-32 Tigers. But Blaise Porter fouled out late in the third. The Tigers would play without their point guard the rest of the way.
Junior Leo Gebauer took over and did a stellar job. He calmly directed the Tiger attack. But the Wolves sensed an opportunity and made a furious attack on the Tigers’ lead, led by Cam Buffington’s 30-point effort.
The Tigers scored eight points in the fourth, while WMU scored 20. The Tigers lead held and time ran out for the Wolves. The Tigers win was by six, 58-52.
Blaise Porter did his damage in three quarters, scoring 23 and pulling down six rebounds.
Kade Benjamin had 19 points and eight rebounds. Leo Gebauer had eight points and six boards.
Brendan Richey had five points, two rebounds, and two steals. Memphis Watson had two rebounds and Brigham Porter had one, both coming off the bench.
