Annie and Marcus Powell planned, cooked and coordinated another Community Thanksgiving meal. They are the first to tell you that it is all the volunteers that make the event possible. True, but the vision of this couple is the driving force behind it all. Every year Marcus wonders if there will be enough food. Sure enough there is always a bit to send home with folks.
Last year, 193 meals were delivered to homes or consumed in the Clark cafeteria. This year, expectations are more people will join this event. In addition to a traditional Thanksgiving menu, the Thanksgiving atmosphere is apparent everywhere. Rather than eating alone, community members can eat, visit, and enjoy the meaning of Thanksgiving. Families from pioneer and pre-mechanized days will tell you that sitting down on the fourth Thursday of November with the corn picked and in the crib, all other crops secured for winter, the butchering and canning done was truly a Thanksgiving to be enjoyed. For most people now, Thanksgiving is a time to meet and greet friends. and family. The Twelfth Annual Community meal provides a time for everyone to be thankful and enjoy the fellowship of the day.
Annie and Marcus are grateful for all the time and help given by all the volunteers. Thank you. New London’s “village” makes a difference again.
