Jul. 18, 2024 12:00 am
The July 8 meeting of the VFW Auxiliary was filled with pride, fun and accolades for a fine year of hard work. Special guests at the meeting were Clark Elementary students Olivia Thannert, third grade; Bennett Duncan, first grade, and their families. Members and guests began the evening with supper.
Supper was followed by the formal presentations. The VFW Auxiliaries nationwide sponsor many Scholarships, Awards and Contests. Olivia Thannert won the New London competition in “Get Excited for the Red, White and Blue.” She sang the Star Spangled Banner. Her rendition of the national anthem placed Third at the State of Iowa VFW meeting. Shyness overtook Olivia at the meeting. Her mother kindly played a tape of Olivia’s performance. President Klaus presented Olivia with $10 and a certificate.
Bennett Duncan won the New London competition in the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. He went on to earn First Place in the state for his age group. Bennett received $25 for his Illustrating America poster. The judges awarded his artistic work 280 points out of a possible 300. Bennett's drawing will be entered at the VFW National Convention in Kentucky this month.
