The Volleyball team had a busy month. The ladies traveled to Cardinal high school on Oct. 2 to play the Comets. They played hard and were rewarded with a victory, taking the match three games to one. The Tigers’ scores were 21, 25, 25, 25 to Cardinals’ 25, 16, 18, 20.
Individual stats:
- Sophie Malott — 16 kills/21 digs/2 blocks/3 aces on 13 of 15 serving.
- Tysann Gipple — 11 kills/ 13 digs/ 3 aces on 25 of 25 serving.
- Morgan Jones — 15 assists/4 kills/17 digs/3 blocks/ 3 aces on 13 of 13 serving.
- Hailee Dudley — 7 digs/2 aces on 12 of 13 serving.
- Kayla Strawhacker — 4 kills/4 digs.
- Lillie Gallup — 19 digs/2 aces on 7 of 11 serving.
- Marlianna Woodsmall — 19 assists/8 digs/2 aces on 11 of 13 serving.
The Hawk Eye maybe said it best with the headline, “Malott has monster match for New London on Senior Night.” On Oct. 5, Sophie dominated in her last regular season volleyball game on her home court. Last month she notched her 500th career kill and her 1000th dig. On this night she was adding to her stats as the Tigers beat Fort Madison in four, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, and 25-17.
Senior Night is always bittersweet as Tysann Gipple was playing her last home match too. On this night, led by the two seniors, the Tigers roared! Sophie had 28 kills and 19 digs. Tysann had 11 kills and 19 digs. Morgan Jones had eight kills, six aces, 22 digs, and 20 assists. She also reached her 500th dig … quite an accomplishment! Hailee Dudley added six digs, Kayla Strawhacker had eight digs, and Marlianna Woodsmall had 22 assists. Way to go ladies!
The last regular match of the season was against the Danville Bears on their home court on Oct. 10. It was a tough night for the Tigers, losing the Fresh/Soph and JV matches. The Varsity also lost 3-0. Danville was fired up at the prospect of a sweep, and on that night, they got their wish. The scores were 24-26, 19-25, and 16-25 in a hard-fought battle. There were no stats available at press time.
Tiger Volleyball started postseason play on Oct. 16 when they played Notre Dame at ND HS in Burlington. Sadly the Tigers were vanquished by Notre Dame in three: 25-22, 25-17, and 25-15. They finished their season with a 9-18 record. They gave it all they had and never quit working hard. It’s the last time Sophie and Tysann will don the black and gold. They will be sorely missed. But there was a milestone reached. Tysann ended her career by reaching her 500th kill. Way to go Miss Gipple!
The individual stats were as follows:
- Sophie Malott — 10 kills/12 digs
- Tysann Gipple — 15 kills/16 digs/2 aces on 11/11 serving.
- Morgan Jones — 14 assists/4 kills/12 digs/1 ace on 5/6 serving.
- Marilanna Woodsmall — 5 digs.
- Lillie Gallup — 13 digs.
It’s hard to believe the volleyball season is over. It was full of ups and downs, but the ladies and their coaches worked hard all season. Tiger Nation enjoyed every minute and was so proud of each and every player!
