Wednesday After School at the Library

Our New London public library meets many community needs. Two of its favorite activities are Tyke Time on the first and third Saturdays of the month and the Wednesday after school projects. During the summer, the library continues programs for K-12 students. Tyke Time is a year-round event. For K-12 students, the summer program changes a bit to accommodate the many organizations give programs to libraries around the county. When school resumes, the Nugen Library offers its after school program.
This year, the library has a new assistant, Nora Meirotto. It is quite a job to plan programs and gather all the supplies necessary to ensure their success. In fitting with the season, Nora’s themes included apples. Tyke Time included planting apple seeds along with group reading a book about apples. Parents and grandparents were very complimentary about the Tyke program. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, students learned how to make great treats using apples. Along with the cooking lesson, some rules of cleanliness were covered.
Three treats were made and consumed: apple taquitos, apple doughnuts and apple nachos. No matter what time one leaves school, they are starved. Arriving at the library and finding out the day’s activity is cooking is wonderful. Everyone washed their hands and got ready to enjoy the afternoon.
Apple Taquito Instructions: Butter a small jelly roll pan. Place a small soft taco on the counter. Place chopped apple down the center. Top with a ribbon of caramel sauce. Roll up the taco, butter it and roll the taquito in cinnamon and sugar. Place on the jelly roll pan. When the pan is full, place it in the oven at 350 for 15 minutes. Bet you can’t stop with just one. However, the New London students did stop with one. They had 2 more recipes to try. Youngsters were already looking at the toppings planned for the doughnuts and nachos.
As the year progresses and students settle in new routines, after school library Wednesdays will be an important part.
