Henry County Conservation Department held its annual Wine Walk in the Woods. This fundraiser is dedicated to providing feed and supplies for the live animal collection at the Oakland Mills site. Many of these animals have been injured severely and cannot be returned to the wild. The animals are provided the best possible life and serve a wonderful purpose in their captivity. They are used in many educational programs and presentations throughout the county.
This year, fifteen vendors or organizations were available for visitors. Sac & Fox Rock Club invited visitors to become new members and explore the outdoors while finding interesting Iowa rocks and minerals. They are responsible for the new display in Nature Center featuring Iowa’s geodes. The Conservation Department had a table explaining their goals and projects. All God’s Creatures, a new animal pound, discussed their vision for helping unwanted and lost animals. Preserve Oakland Mills advertised their upcoming Fun Day. The restoration of the walking bridge across the Skunk River and preservation other historic sites is an important function of this group.
The vendors had a wide range of items available for sale. Small businesses showed their food, wine and handmade items. Of special interest were fresh strawberries. One doesn’t think of these as fall fruits. Those participating were: Bo’s BBQ, Blueberry Bottom, Butches Woodshed Pens, Mary Kay, Ardon Creek Vineyard, Buzzy’s Bee Honey, Shut Your Piehole Cheesecake, Handmade by Sue Allen, Permanent Jewelry, Traces Boutique and Mary Martha Rosaries and Religious Gifts.
Each vendor also had some of their favorite wines to share with shoppers. One not only discovered new things and new people — they learned a lot about local wineries. The evening could also be described as “A Great Stroll” but next year look for another Wine Walk in the Woods. Don’t forget to support the Nature Center’s animals as well as the work of the Conservation Department throughout the year.
