It’s that time of year when all the action moves inside to the gym as girls and boys basketball and wrestling get their seasons started.
Girls Basketball
The girls have two new coaches this year as they start the season nine strong. On Dec. 3, the Tigers traveled to West Burlington to take on the Lady Falcons. The Tigers were held scoreless in the first quarter and lost the game 20-56.
The leading scorer was Megan Lee with six points, five rebounds, and two steals. Mylee Miller had four points and five rebounds. Molly Proost added three points and a steal and Ruby Myers, Shay Wilka, and Morgan Jones each had two points. Jones also pulled down four rebounds and had a steal.
On Dec. 6, the team traveled to Van Buren County. The final score was in Van Buren’s favor, 45-25. There were no individual stats available.
Boys Basketball
The boys' team has also struggled. The youthful Tigers started the West Burlington game with a 10 to 3 lead, then Falcons woke up and when the first quarter was over, the score was NL-10, WB-25. The final score was NL-42, WB-97.
Brigham Porter led the Tigers with 16 points, two rebounds, and a steal. Israel Lemley added nine points, four rebounds, and a steal and block. Dylan Burden added six points and two steals. Tate Welcher had four points and steal. Logan Franklin added three, and Archer Bonnesen and Carter Adams each had two.
On Dec. 6, the Tigers were in Van Buren County. The JV boys lost a heartbreaker, 45-44. The varsity lost 45 — 65. Brigham Porter had 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Tate Welcher added 12 points, three steals, and six rebounds. Riley Raines had six points. Israel Lemley, Dylan Burden, and Gavin Strawhacker each had four points.
There is no Tuesday night game this week. The Tigers will host the Notre Dame Nikes on Friday, Dec 13. Maybe it will be our “lucky” night!

The team title went to Fort Madison, with Coach Nic Chiri and Coach Mark Chiri back in Lorber gym. The Tigers placed 2nd as a team. The other teams that participated were Mid-Prairie, Baxter, Medford Area (Wisconsin), Lone Tree, Cedar Rapids Washington, and Iowa City High.
The Tiger Cub Tournament on Dec. 8 had a big turnout. There were 240 kids participating. Over 30 Tiger Cubs wrestled. They competed hard and represented the town great! Coach Loyd wants to give a big shout out to the boosters and parents and the countless volunteers that made the busy weekend go off without too many glitches. It was a great success.
The Tigers compete Thursday, Dec. 12 at their ONLY home dual. It will be Pack the Gym night and Senior Night. The meet starts at 6 p.m. Then Saturday, Dec. 14, the Tigers will be at North Cedar.
