The Old Farmer’s Almanac began publishing names for the full moons in the 1930s. January’s full moon is known as the Wolf Moon. It is thought that wolves were more likely to be heard howling at this time of the year. This howling is presumed to designate lack of food. January full moon is also known as the Snow Moon or the Ice Moon. February is now commonly called the Snow Moon. There are many Native American names for the January moon. The original ancestors of Iowa Native Americans, the Oneida chose to call it “Someone’s Ears are Freezing Moon.”
