YAK Attack Success Story
Jul. 4, 2024 12:00 am
Describing the Friends of Geode 2024 YAK Attack can quickly put one to sleep but participating in the event was an invigorating joyous undertaking.
June 22, 2024 turned out to be a gorgeous day. The Danville Lions Club and the Friends hosted this event. About 85 kayakers met at the Lake Geode Beach Shelter house to begin a fun day on the water. A complete family event was planned with children’s games with prizes both large and small. New London Fire & Rescue was there to ensure safety as well.
After registering, Friends of Geode provided volunteer equipment and personnel to get the kayaks to the water. The Beach Shelter house had merchandise to be purchased and a great number of give away items. Many children were pleased to get boogey boards for later water play. After enjoying time on the water and collecting proof of participation tickets, the kayaks came back to enter their name for a grand prize. Grand prizes were plentiful and practical.
The day ended at 3 p.m. with the drawings. John Fullencamp, President of Friends of Geode, presented a plaque of appreciation to Josh McDonnell. Jason coordinated the many volunteers, ideas and activities. His work ensured the return of YAK Attack to an annual event on the Friends calendar.
The next event is the Geode Challenge Race. Kathi Myers has announced that registration opened Monday, July 1! Anyone looking for a fall trail race is invited to come out and run this grassroots event!! This annual fundraiser for the Friends of Geode is sponsored by the Danville Lion's Club. Kathi emphasizes:
“We offer a 5k out-and-back, a12k single loop course or 25k double loop course around the Geode Lake perimeter trail. It's a lot of fun and so beautiful!”
Return to Lake Geode for a Happy Fourth of July weekend! There is an installation of a new kayak dock at the main boat ramp. Park personnel are working on building a path to it, so please be patient with them while they work. Keep an eye on Friends of Geode and the DNR park personnel as they return Geode State Park to a well-managed recreation site.
