Sunday afternoons are busy at several schools. The public school volleyball season has ended, but now it the time for the Youth League.
New London can support four matches at one time using the Charles Lorber Gymnasium and the new Elementary Gym. The parking lots are full as family members arrive to support younger players. This league is important as young girls learn the skills needed to join their school teams when they reach seventh grade.
Jackie Housman, New London counselor and volleyball coach, explained the program. All youth teams in this league are coached by volunteers. The refs and scorekeepers are volunteers are well. This league is hosted by different schools each week and has been given another option rather than competing in the YMCA league in Burlington. The girls practice in their hometowns, and the games are at a different school every Sunday! By creating this league, the schools hoped to increase participation. Parents don’t have to travel to Burlington for practices and games.
New London has over 50 girls playing for New London Youth League this year. There are three teams of third and fourth graders coached by Jackie Housman and Alyssa Lipper, and two teams of fifth and sxith graders coached by Brandy Myers. The future of the New London Volleyball program is ensured by having so many girls excited to be participating. Parents are also pleased. The cost and time spent traveling is much less.
