FAIRFIELD - The podium was littered with the top wrestlers from Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant and Washington on Saturday. The three Southeast Conference teams have had excellent regular seasons, which culminated in strong performances at the Southern Iowa Classic.
The de-facto SEC Tournament did not disappoint for area boys wrestlers. Hosts Fairfield finished second in team scoring, while the Trojans and Panthers led the Union area schools with three first place-finishers each.
Aven Beauchamp and Levi Evans both took home titles for the Panthers at 106 and 120 pounds, respectively. Ramzy Davis was also a champion at 157 pounds.
“I think I wrestled well,” Davis said. “The last match I was a little bit un-situationally aware because he was trying to throw me and I let my arm go up, but it ended up working out. I definitely think overall I did as good as I needed to.”
Dain Burkhart had an impressive result in his final match. The Fairfield senior pinned Burlington’s Adrian Perez-Hall in 3:29 to finish first in the 175 pound bracket.
Burkhart also took some revenge against a familiar foe. Perez-Hall won the previous three meetings between the two 175-pounders this season.
“Last two have been one-score matches,” Burkhart said. “It’s hurt, but it felt good to get back out there and get the match that I know I could’ve won. I got exactly what I wanted and finished exactly how I was hoping to.”
Jasper Carpenter was also a champion for Fairfield at 132 pounds. Dusty Haynes took the 150-pound title, winning by technical fall over Ft. Madison’s Ryker Peters.
The Southeast Iowa Super Conference also held its boys wrestling tournament Saturday. A pair of Highland wrestlers earned titles in their respective weight classes.
An all-Union battle in the 106-pound first place match saw Landon Sweeting for the Huskies pin Columbus/W-MU’s Justin Knipfer in 2:52. Rocky Hamilton picked up a second title for Highland at 138 pounds with a win by major decision 14-0 over Burlington Notre Dame’s Jared Glendening.
Hamilton’s win prevented Burlington Notre Dame from adding to a stockpile of victories Saturday. The Nikes won seven individual titles and led the team scoring with 267.5 points, 115 more than second place Columbus/WMU.
Bowen Thomson (132), Trevor Phillips (175) and Kason Dopler (190) all finished runner up for Columbus/W-MU along with Knipfer. Van Buren County and WACO had a pair of second place wrestlers. Leo Jirak (126) and Alex Scott (215) placed runner up for VBC, while Ian Maize (113) and Harley Larrimore (150) were second for WACO.
Highland’s Cash Cole was a second place finisher at 120 pounds. Pekin also had a lone second place wrestler in Brantyn Sieren at 285.
Next up for area wrestlers are the district tournaments, which are scheduled for Feb. 14. The top two finishers in each weight class for Class 1A and 2A will advance to the state tournament Feb. 18 at the Casey’s Center in Des Moines.
