Iowa State University Extension and Outreach launches "Garden Academy" Spring Session

WASHINGTON — Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is proud to announce the upcoming Spring 2026 session of Garden Academy, a comprehensive horticulture program formerly known as Iowa Master Gardener training. This 10-week program is designed for anyone looking to deepen their gardening knowledge, from casual hobbyists to dedicated community volunteers.

The Garden Academy runs from Feb. 16 through April 24 and offers a robust curriculum covering 17 different horticulture topics through online video lectures, reading assignments, and interactive quizzes.

Two Ways to Participate

Prospective students can choose between two distinct tracks based on their goals:

Iowa Master Gardener (Volunteer Track): Designed for those who wish to give back to their community. The cost is $175, and participants commit to providing 40 hours of volunteer service. Applications are open from Jan. 5 — 30.

Iowa Home Gardener (Non-Volunteer Track): Perfect for those who want the education without the volunteer commitment. The cost is $350, and registration begins Feb. 2 via the ISU Extension Store.

Local Support and Community Connection

Trainees in Washington will have the opportunity to meet in person at the local Extension Office on specific dates throughout the spring to foster community and hands-on learning. Scheduled local meetings include:

April 9 & 21

All local meetings are held from 6 to 7 p.m.

Additionally, optional live Zoom sessions will be held on March 3, March 24, and April 14 to provide further support and engagement.
