Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Recently our staff has been working on learning all about the new machines we will be featuring in the Make IT Space we are completing in the basement here at the library. I have to admit it seemed like a daunting task when I first started. I enjoy learning new things, but I had doubts and insecurities that snuck into my thoughts. What if I fail? What if I cannot figure it out? But, with a bit of trepidation I began.
My first task was to be able to turn on the Cricut machine and learn the basics. Thankfully, I was not alone. It was good to have a friend helping. Two minds were definitely better than one. I couldn’t believe how freeing it was to be able to set out to do a task and complete it! The end product wasn’t perfect, but it was satisfying to be able to have a desire to do something and then actually find success.
This gave me enough courage to move on to trying out the new sewing machine. It has been quite a few years since I had used one and I wasn’t the greatest at it back then. I was delighted to learn that I was not only able to sew on the machine but also make beautiful stitches. It made me feel like a kid again to try something new. I cannot wait to get back to the machine soon and continue to work on more challenging pieces.
The next area I am going to try out is the recording studio. I have always wanted to create a podcast or edit some music on my own. We don’t have all the parts we need for the studio yet, so it will be a bit before I get to give it a go. This will give me a little time to read about it and research how I will want to begin.
I tell you all of this because I want to encourage you. Has there been something you have always wanted to try? Do it! It will feel great to put your effort and time towards something that will make you happy and productive. Maybe there will be something you will want to try in our new Make IT Space when it is finished. I hope you will try something new and find just as much enjoyment in it as I have.
