On May 15, approximately 70 Mid-Prairie East Elementary second-graders were able to learn more about agriculture through a cooperative learning opportunity provided in partnership with twenty-two Mid-Prairie FFA members, Sam Jamison, the Washington County Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, and the Iowa Corn Education trailer exhibit.
The Ag on the Lawn activity wrapped up the year of agriculturally related lessons provided by Sam Jamison. Second grade students along with their teachers went to five learning stations.
At the first station, students went through the Iowa Corn Education trailer where they learned about how corn is a part of their everyday lives. Mid-Prairie FFA members presented the other stations. The animal science station included information on how to approach animals, feed they eat, how to give injections and how to identify animals. The grain safety station presented about how to work safely around grain, showing how hard it is to remove someone trapped in grain, how grain dust causes explosions, and tested their reaction times. The byproduct station activities provided students with an opportunity to identify products in their lives that come from animals. At the plant session, students discussed how plants grow and planted their own seeds to start at home.
Another highlight of the day included a chance to participate in Ag Olympic events with their classmates.
