Starting the week of October 13th, a portion of one lane on W61 (12th Street) will be closed to allow the contractor to begin work to pave a 4-foot wide portion of the shoulders from East 15th Street in Washington, north to G36 (220th Street).
Construction is expected to take place in phases. Phase one will start Wednesday, Oct. 15 and last three days. There will be a break until the contractor can return and complete the pavement patching part of the project. Weather permitting, the final phase will consist of placing the new paved shoulders along with new shoulder rock along side the new paved shoulder.
The contract for this project was awarded to L.L. Pelling Co., Inc. of North Liberty, IA for just under $800,000 and is being done as a safety improvement project to address the edge ruts that consistently develop along the existing pavement due to the high volume of commuter, truck, and agricultural traffic on W61. To address this safety concern, Washington County applied for and was awarded a $450,000 Highway Safety Improvement Program grant, from the Iowa Department of Transportation, to help pay for the construction of these safety improvements.
Washington County Engineer Jacob Thorius said, “I appreciate the Iowa DOT providing the opportunity to apply for and use these funds to improve safety for the traveling public in Washington County.”
Throughout the duration of this project, W61 will be open to thru traffic; however, traffic will be restricted to one lane while the contractor is working. The contractor will utilize pilot cars and flaggers to help facilitate the flow of traffic thru the work zone, which will change daily as the contractor progresses through the project.
If you need to travel within the project limits, you are encouraged to allow for extra time to reach your destination, use caution when traveling through the work zone and obey all directions from the contractor.
