John Adams was one of two men who became U.S. presidents who signed the Declaration of Independence. After signing, Mr. Adams wrote to his wife Abigail saying, “This day shall be commemorated through history by the ringing of church bells, and the building of bonfires.”
The Congregation of the Salem Church of God, northeast of Haskins on Yucca Avenue, north of G36, have done just that for the last 65 years. Everyone is welcome to this year’s bell-ringing at 11:45 a.m. on July 4. You can help ring the bell, or just listen to the celebration.
The bell will be rung for 15 minutes. This is usually about 645 peals.
