The Washington Economic Development Group (WEDG) board of directors approved the selection of Melanie Bimson to succeed Mary Audia as their next Executive Director at their December board of directors meeting. Mary Audia will be retiring in the 1st Quarter of 2026 and will work together with Melanie Bimson during the 1st Quarter transition period.
Bimson, a native of Washington, Iowa, will be leaving her current position as Economic Development Program Manager with Greater Iowa City Inc. to take on the leadership role at WEDG. Greater Iowa City Inc. is a network of business and public sector leaders who collaborate to support local companies, guide investment, and grow a resilient economy throughout Johnson County.
“Melanie understands the foundation of our organization and is anxious to continue the exceptional work of all who have helped get WEDG where we are today,” said Brett DeWolf, President of the WEDG board of directors. “We look forward to Melanie joining the WEDG team, and we are excited to have her leadership, experience and enthusiasm.”
Under the WEDG Board and Mary Audia’s leadership, the WEDG organization has carried out an aggressive and successful plan of work that aims to create and promote a sustainable environment for economic growth in Washington County. In October 2025, the WEDG Board adopted an updated strategic plan that identifies the strategic pillars for action. They include building child care capacity, existing business retention and
expansion, housing and workforce development and continuing to be a strong catalyst for action throughout Washington County.
“Through my work with Greater Iowa City, I’ve worked closely with companies and communities at a variety of growth stages. My approach centered on solving challenges and connecting business needs with practical solutions that support a strong workforce and vibrant communities,” said Melanie Bimson. “I’m excited to bring this experience to WEDG and Washington County as I collaborate with local and regional partners to support the long-term success of the area.”
Melanie Bimson is expected to start work with WEDG on Jan. 19 and will be working directly with Mary Audia during a leadership transition period that is expected to take place throughout the 1st quarter of 2026. The WEDG Board worked with Audia to put in place a transition plan with the goal of maintaining momentum on addressing the WEDG strategic pillars.
“Melanie will be returning to Washington County, where she grew up, and we’re excited about the broad range of skills and experiences she’ll be bringing to the WEDG leadership role,” said Amanda Russell, WEDG Vice- President and Search Committee Co- Chair. “We believe that WEDG is currently in a strong position and we’re excited about the future.”
