WINFIELD — The next planning meeting for the upcoming Crooked Creek Days is scheduled for Feb. 25, at 6 p.m., and so far, the committee is running short of volunteers to make this year's celebration happen.
"If we don't have a planning committee, we don't get it done," said Lisa Rees of the Winfield Community Development Group. "We only need about five people right now to get the planning committee going. Five would be great for that. And then 10-15 people the weekend of Crooked Creek Days to help out, and of course the whole community to come and have fun."
The annual Winfield communitywide celebration typically takes place the first weekend in August, and has been a staple of Winfield's summers since the early 1990s. In years past, the celebration has included cardboard boat races, a parade, softball tournaments, tractor pulls, quilt shows, talent shows, vendors, community church services, a street dance, kids games, and many more events to entertain the entire community. None of this could happen without the volunteers who organize it.
According to Rees, the volunteers would get to choose how much of a time commitment they are able to handle outside of the monthly planning meetings.
"We have monthly meetings, but they really can decide which committee they want to be on,” she said. “They could just be on one event instead of the whole weekend if they wanted to. We need a planning committee that oversees the entire weekend, coordinating with bands that come, vendors that come, all the events making sure the events don't overlap. We also have other committees that oversee individual events, like a vendor committee that only handles the vendors. It's really just all what you make of it."
Time is of the essence when it comes to putting together a committee to coordinate the festivities this year.
"We already have vendors reaching out to us to book coming here,” Rees said, “So, we really do need a planning committee. Vendors are filling up their summer calendars. If we don't have a planning committee, we just won’t get it done.”
Anyone wanting to volunteer to help with Crooked Creek Days in any way can contact Rees at city hall, 319-257-6661, or come to the planning meeting on Feb. 25, at 6 p.m.
The Winfield Community Development Group welcomes any volunteers to make this year's celebration a success! Unfortunately, without volunteers for a planning committee, Crooked Creek Days may not happen this year.
