A sure sign of spring is when New London’s Dover Museum opens on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1-4 p.m.
This was the major news during the Dover Historical Society’s monthly board meeting on Friday on April 28. Staffing will be a little different this year. There is a shortage of volunteers which could affect museum hours and programs in the future. The museum is looking for volunteers to work alongside a board member when the museum is open. You will be taught and shown everything that you will need to know.
There were 57 second-graders from Clark Elementary visiting the museum on April 21. Some activities were cut back due to the shortage of volunteers. Something new was added this year. Our thanks to local BNSF railroad engineer Dustin Bachtell, who made an Operation Lifesaver presentation to all the kids in the depot waiting room. Everyone received a Sly Fox and Birdie coloring book and a box of BNSF colored pencils. The second-graders have been trained to be safe around trains.
The society is also pleased to announce that Ana Lair has joined the board. She brings the number of board members up to 24.
The strange April weather has once again delayed the second story window repair. New storage drawers will be built under existing displays to alleviate the storage situation. We can guarantee that every square inch is being utilized in the museum building.
The program committee met immediately after the board meeting. The first Dover Sunday program will be in June. The date and subject have been chosen and will be announced later. A list of possible programs is being assembled. If there is a program you would like to see, let us know and we will see if it can be done.
All museum programs and activities are free to the public. We keep hinting that we need more volunteers. If you like to prepare and serve meals and that is all you would like to do, the museum can use you. If you have talent in another area, we can find a place for you.
Come and visit the museum this weekend.
