Meet Winfield’s own “Mr. Coffee.” Jaden Chalupa is the owner and operator of Winfield’s newest business, Emerald Grinds. He explained how he came up with the name.
“Green is my favorite color and it just kind of came to me one morning,” he said.
Saturday morning, I found Jaden busy filling orders for people who were lined up at the door to purchase their first drink at Emerald Grinds’ soft opening. If the turn-out was any indication of what the future holds for Jaden and Emerald Grinds, Jaden will certainly continue to be a busy man! From comments heard prior to the opening, it was clear that people were looking forward to having a coffee shop in Winfield.
Jaden was born in Utah; however, his family relocated to Iowa when he was ten years old. He grew up in the Wayland area and graduated from WACO High School. He is the father of two daughters, Juniper, 6, and Magnolia, 4. His parents, Scott Chalupa and Sherise DeWolf, also reside in the Washington area. He has one brother, Justyn.
“I currently live in Washington, but would love to move to Winfield someday,” Jaden revealed, adding, “I am super excited to become a member of this community.” He came to Winfield at the suggestion of Christi Klouda who recently opened The Gypsy Roots Salon here. Jaden said, “She expressed a need for a coffee shop in the community.”
“I worked at Hy-Vee for 13 years. This is my first business venture," said Jaden, who will start as the sole employee but hopes to hire 2-4 more staff in the future.
Business hours are open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closed on Sundays and Mondays. The menu will feature coffee, espresso drinks, lotus drinks, frozen Red Bull smoothies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, bagels, sandwiches, and yogurt parfaits.
“Our signature drink is an iced salted caramel latte with toasted marshmallow cold foam,” said Jaden, adding, “our menu will change seasonally, offering new drinks and food items.”
When asked if he had any special training to become a coffee entrepreneur, he replied, “There was a virtual course on how to operate the machines, and I’ve learned everything else on the fly.”
We welcome Jaden to our community. Be sure to stop in and meet Jaden and enjoy a drink of your choice, perhaps paired with a pastry or sandwich –or both!
