[Editor’s note: The Winfield-Wayland Beacon News reached out to Aaron Cummings to tell us about himself and his run for WMU school board.]
Why are you running for school board?
I am running for my 3rd term. With three kids I understand how important the board is in guiding the future of the district. Fiscal responsibility and sound, well thought out decision making are vital for smaller districts. I feel those are both traits I possess.
Why do you think you would be a good fit for the board?
I have a strong rural background and understand the importance of non traditional education options. It is vital for the success of our district and it's students that they be presented with all career paths and opportunities. I have and will continue to advocate for CTE, FFA, and the arts while also promoting our traditional education pathways.
What are your main accomplishments in life?
Marrying my wonderful wife Greta and raising 3 young men who love God, old trucks, and country music as much as their parents do and who still want to spend time with us as teenagers.
What about the district needs the most improvement, and how could you as a board member help with this?
The biggest area of concern for our district is the same as many others. Declining enrollment. We have a phenomenal staff and administration and are making great strides in academic improvement. We just need more kids. Our superintendent Mrs. Wahls is, at board direction, working with the city to brain storm ways to promote both the community and our school. A fantastic example of those meetings is the recent student developed "commercials" highlighting local businesses.
