Southeast Iowa Union offers audio versions of articles using Instaread. Some words may be mispronounced.
They say what goes round comes round, and WMU’s new Family and Consumer Science teacher certainly qualifies as an example.
Kathryn Ney, one of WMU’s newest staff members, is a graduate of WMU. She grew up on a farm near Mt. Union, the eighth daughter of Lucky Krieger and the late Bub Krieger.
Following her graduation, Ms. Ney attended Drake University for two years where she played on the softball team. She went on to attend the University of Iowa where she earned a degree in English Education. She also obtained endorsements in Reading, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Coaching to further enhance her educational qualifications. Before returning to WMU, she taught at Hillcrest Academy (formerly Iowa Mennonite School) and the Iowa City Community School district.
She and her husband, Randall, met as college freshmen at Drake University. After marriage, they lived in Alaska where she did her student teaching at Wasilla High School. Their next move took them to New Mexico where they worked as substitute teachers before returning to Iowa City. They also lived in Madison, Wisconsin for eight years where two of their four children were born.
Kathryn and Randall’s eldest is Hannah who lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their son and daughter-in-law, Levi and Gabrielle, live in Madison, Wisconsin with their newborn daughter, Artenza. Jesse and Elora, their second son and daughter-in-law, live in Tucson, Arizona with their children, Teddy, Lou and Tigris. Their youngest child, Rubye, lives in Iowa City. They make their home on a farm near Wellman.
When she is not in the classroom, Ms. Ney enjoys hiking, canoeing and being with her family and visiting her mom. “I also love finding creative ways to make a space more comfortable and functional. Working with my hands, listening to music, and being in nature are things that make me happy.”
WMU, along with the community’s residents, welcome Kathryn back to her former “home base.”
