Improving the job search process, preparing for career certification, raising college entrance test scores, and improving 21st century basic skills are all possible with just the click of a mouse at the Winfield Public Library thanks to funding from the Iowa Workforce Development.

25 YEARS AGO – FEBRUARY 19, 1998
Students from Winfield are among 150 student musicians from more than 60 Iowa high schools selected to play in the 1998 Iowa Honor Band at the University of Iowa School of Music. Sean Honts and Lindsey Loyd will represent WMU.
The Winfield Beautification Committee, in cooperation with the city council, has begun full restoration of the city park, located on the east side of Winfield. The park has been reseeded but now needs financial and physical help for the planting of trees, shrubs, flower beds and planters.
On January 17, seven of the WMU wrestlers went to the Durant tournament where they had the privilege of talking to former University of Iowa wrestlers. DJ Hobbs, Ricky Smith, Justin Hammonds, Cody Dettwiller, Tyler Wiemerskerch, Josh Knipfer and Jason Knipfer represented.
50 YEARS AGO – FEBRUARY 15, 1973
The public is cordially invite to attend the reception honoring Dr. and Mrs. Reuben B. Widmer this coming Sunday afternoon. The reception, which is being held at the Presbyterian Church is sponsored by the Winfield Community Action Club.
Gas bills for the patrons of the Winfield Municipal Gas System will first notice a slight increase in their gas bills which will be received about the first of March. The increase will be 5%.
W-MU’s high scoring junior Mike Weber was named to the Southeast Iowa Conference seven man first team selected by coaches last weekend. Weber led all conference scorers with 365 points for the regular season.
75 YEARS AGO – FEBRUARY 19, 1948
Three Winfield high school contestants, as well as the one-act play cast, will go on to the next speech contest as a result of their ratings in the preliminary contest here on Monday afternoon and evening. They are Mary Ellen Hoover, in dramatics; Gladys Lonsdale in humorous; and Barbara Van Vranken in interpretative reading.
Five candidates have filed for two vacancies occurring this spring on the Winfield school board. Three names were filed Wednesday. They are names of Clone Swarts, Allan Haight, and Harry Rossiter. The names of Floyd Deal and Charles Van Dyke were filed last week.
Winfield High School defeated Morning Sun here Friday night, 40 – 27, in a game that clinched first place in the Southeastern Iowa League for Winfield. Quinlin and Finch shared scoring honors with 11 points apiece. Grimmer stood out on defense for Winfield.
100 YEARS AGO – FEBRUARY 15, 1923
When the people woke up Monday morning they were surprised to find the deepest snow of the winter – and probably the deepest for several winters. The citizen who makes a practice to clean his walks had all he wanted to do and then some. It did not seem to interfere with auto traveling, but rather improved the roads so that gasoline cars and slipping, sliding sleighs found the going pretty good, although very few of the latter showed up.
O.L Karsten, cashier of the Farmers National Bank, was elected as Secretary – Treasurer of the Henry County Bankers’ Assn., at their semi-annual meeting and banquet in Mt. Pleasant Tuesday night. We assure the bankers of the county that their correspondence and funds will be handled OK as Orlo weilds a wicked pen, and loves to count the cash. J.M. Lindly and G.R. Arthaud, of the Bank of Winfield, and Harry E. Olson, of Faarmers National, were also in attendance at the meeting.
Mt. Union High School notes: Last Thursday evening the town girls’ basketball team played the teachers. The score was 5 to 55 in favor of the girls. Friday evening the town girls played against the country girls and won by a score of 9 to 12.
Classified ad: FOUND – Raymond Dameron picked up a black and white fur mitten on the street. It happened to be the mate to one already here. Someone has lost a mighty good pair of mittens.
