2015
Chas Messer of Winfield was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from Coe College on May 10, majoring in biology and molecular biology with a minor in chemistry. He graduated cum laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.
WMU bus driver, Mark Stalder, was honored for 25 years of service to the school.
WMU kindergarten teacher, Michelle Niebuhr, was honored for 20 years of service to the school.
2010
Jeff and Sandy Suter of Winfield and Jim and Julia Thorius of Indianola are pleased to announce the engagement of their children, Erin Suter and Jacob Thorius, both of Washington.
2005
Two donations have been made to the Winfield Fire Department. Pilot Grove Savings Bank donated $1000, and Tyson Foods donated 300 pork loins and sausage for the firemen’s annual pancake and sausage supper.
A single vehicle accident at the grid of 2300 and 170th Street has claimed the life of Kevin Lamont Messenger, age 46, of rural Mt. Union, on June 7, 2005.
Rhonda and Rick Connop celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on June 21.
2000
Gary Crill was appointed to serve out the term of Richard Hand, who had resigned his position as councilman to serve as utility and police department employee, at the last city council meeting.
Jerry Winston Allender, age 44, of Trenton died June 10, 2000 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
1995
Randy and Jan Slaughter have announced the birth of their son, Eric Dale, born June 2, 1995, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Plans are underway for the second annual Crooked Creek Day celebration to be held August 5.
On Oct. 1 sales tax will increase from 5 percent to 6 percent in most Henry County communities.
1990
Tom Rudruck was awarded the outstanding male athlete trophy during the 1990 Sports Camp held at Johnston High School.
Strong winds and heavy rain plummeted the Winfield area last Saturday afternoon. Harley Nelson’s residence northeast of town felt the strong effects of the storm as the wind blew out nine windows. The Nelson’s had about 10 trees uprooted and a barn and garage destroyed. George Kepper’s turkey barn was flattened by the storm also.
1985
A large two-story wooden frame barn was destroyed by fire late Wednesday, May 5, on the Steve Settles farm located two miles north of Winfield. Lost were approximately 100 head of pigs, three bred sows, and five boars.
