2015
Lauren Baker was named to the Dean’s List at Drake University. She is the daughter of Kent and Teresa Baker of Winfield.
Winfield residents have been hearing about the opening of a new Mexican restaurant in Winfield for the past six months at the site of the former Pork’s Restaurant. The El Oasis Restaurant opened for business on Aug. 21, 2015. Owners Rigoberto and Marta Garcia are happily overwhelmed by the crowds they have seen in their restaurant.
The administration, board, and staff at Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Winfield are happy and excited to announce a new addition to their facility is becoming a reality. Sunrise Terrace opened in 1975 as a 64-bed facility. In the 1990s their license was dropped back to a 50-bed facility. In 2015 they have one hall that is designated for dementia residents; buffet dining; and a new program dubbed ‘get well/go home.’ They also provide outpatient physical therapy at the facility. The first phase of the new project will be a new laundry area on the south side. The second phase calls for the remodel of part of the west wing for dining and living room area. The third phase will be dedicated for a transitional skilled care unit and the get well/go home program.
2010
A new professional has arrived to Winfield. Wyatt Peterson, a 1996 graduate of WMU has returned home and opened a law office in a building with family history. Peterson Law Firm is located at 111 S. Oak St., Winfield. Years ago, Wyatt’s maternal grandfather, Homer Hillyard, owned and operated Hillyard Implement in this same building.
2005
Rick Mullen was honored by the Winfield Fire Department upon his resignation. Rick joined the department on July 19, 1975 and resigned on July 18, 2005. In 1994 he was named Firefighter of the Year by the department.
Bill and Mary Frances Rodruck Wintermeyer celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Aug. 27 with family at their farm house. They were married Sept. 7, 1940.
2000
Marvin and Marilyn Lambert will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 3, 2000 with a family dinner at Iris Court in Mt. Pleasant.
LeAnn Farmer and Aaron Cary have announced their engagement and upcoming Sept. 16 wedding.
Jamie and Debbie Fetzer are the parents of a baby boy, Derek Walter, born July 31, 2000.
1995
Kevin and Jeanne Mullen received the “Winfield Beautiful Yard of the Month” award.
Brooke Taylor Hand was born Aug. 18, 1995 to Richard and Jackie Hand of Winfield.
1990
In the WMU district the unofficial count of students was 475 in grades K-12, compared to 395 in the district last year.
Employees of the month at Sunrise Terrace were Kathy Rumelhart, Nancy Hartman, and Rodney fowler.
1985
Two wishes of two worthy youngsters from Winfield will come true thanks to members of the Gold Wing Honda Motorcycle Club, a branch of ‘Dream Factory.’ Renee Buffington was to receive a day at Adventureland in Des Moines, and Tom Rodruck was to receive an Apple II computer.
A farm machinery auction was set for Aug. 24, 1985, for owner, Carl e. Johnson.
1975
Sept. 3 will be the starting day for Happy Hours Nursery School.
The Wayne L. Peterson Estate Auction was scheduled for Aug. 23.
1965
Steve Settles showed Grand Champion 4-H market pigs at the Iowa State Fair.
Winfield Area Recreation members OK'd indebtedness of $105,000 to the Federal Government for the purpose of building the recreation facilities.
1960
Vernene Rodger was crowned Festival Queen by Miss Faye Unkrich. Her attendants were Carolee Stucker and Margaret Wickham.
1955
Ray Ross, age 50, farmer near Winfield, received severe burns on his arms, hands, back, sides and face in a gas explosion as he tried to light a gas water heater in his basement.
Raymond Sharp has announced the sale of his interest in the Graham Lumber Company to George Kepper. Mr. Sharp and Fred Schmidt purchased the lumber company from WT Graham earlier in the year.
Work has started on the new Standard Oil Station on Main Street.
