WAYLAND — Parkview Home asks the Wayland community to come alongside them as they look to ease the financial burden of one of their caregivers as she continues the journey fighting breast cancer for the second time.
Crystal Chunn is a mother to her grown son Bryce. She loves her bulldog Wrigley and the Chicago Cubs. She has also spent well over a decade caring for residents at Parkview Home as a long-term Certified Nurse Aide. Right now, though, Chunn needs others to care for her as she puts up her best fight against a recurrence of breast cancer.
“In her younger years she had breast cancer and had lost her breast,” her friend and co-worker Tricia Hinh said. “And then last fall, she was diagnosed with breast cancer again, in both breasts. So, she had them removed surgery at the end of February.”
With the surgery and treatment, Chunn has not worked since February and the road to recovery still is along one with an anticipated reconstruction surgery in the future. High and the board members of Parkview Home decided they would like to help alleviate some of the financial strain of treatments and time off work through fundraisers.
According to Hinh, the idea began through the prompting of one of the residents that Chunn cared for at Parkview Home.
“She was wanting to do a fundraiser of some sort, but then she passed away and things were postponed a little bit,” Hinh explained. “We discussed it with our boss at work, though, and he took it to the board members.”
With the leadership of Parkview Home Director Ron Semler, the idea gained momentum and plans for a pancake breakfast came to fruition. The pancake breakfast will be Saturday, May 4 at the Wayland Fire Station from 7-10 a.m. with all proceeds going to “provide urgently needed financial aid for Crystal Chunn.” Wayland State Bank also will accept additional donations for Chunn into an account set up on her behalf.
Additionally, Hinh said a T-shirt fundraiser just closed. So, soon enough shirts reading “Her Fight is Our Fight” and “Team Crystal” will appear throughout the Wayland community as individuals show their support for their neighbor.
